If the attack of on and off constipation and diarrhea occurs more than 3 times a month for 6 months, the condition will be IBS. Stress worsens the symptoms.

WHAT IS IBS?

It is a major disorder where the large intestine is affected and abnormal motility is observed causing cramping abdominal pain, on and off constipation and diarrhea.

Diarrhea will be very sudden and with extreme urgency that the person loses control and also experiences bloating, nausea, headache, fatigue, depression, anxiety, feeling of in-complete evacuation.

Some of the causative factors are:

Stress, anxiety.

Excessive or prolonged use of medications.

Irregular diet habits, high calorie meals, high fat diet, excessive dairy products, coffee, tea, citrus fruits, eating too quickly, and eating after long time, after feeling hungry stimulates the attack.

 HOW IBS OCCURS?

The sensitive digestive tract is triggered due to different causative factors mentioned above, these irritant causes the attack and causes contraction of digestive tract which becomes stronger and more frequent and the resulting rapid transit of food and stool through the large intestine often leads to diarrhea, crampy pain results from the strong contractions of the large intestines and increased sensitivity of the receptors in the large intestine that sense stretching and pressure. The attack occurs when person is awake.

According to ayurveda, due to irregular diet habits, there will be hampering of digestive fire and this causes ama formation (toxins), and it affects the intestine causing irregular intestinal functions and this makes excretion of digested and undigested food, sometimes making them dry or sometime in a liquid form thus causing Grahani Roga.
