Migraine Headache

 Migraine is a very common kind of headache where throbbing kind of pain is felt around the eye and temples on one side which is usually associated with sunlight intensity. Migraine headache can be genetic. It can start at any age but usually begins between the ages of 10 and 40. It is 3 times more common among women than in men. It can occur frequently for a long time but then may disappear for many weeks, months or even years. WHAT IS MIGRAINE HEADACHE?It is a type of headache where there is throbbing moderate to severe pain, usually on one side of the head that is worsened by physical activities, light, sound, or smell and is most often associated with nausea or vomiting. There will be mood or behavioral changes at the onset and after the attack and the person gets irritable and restless.

CAUSES

Due to stress and emotions like anger, fear, anxiety, or excitements etc. Sleep disturbances and fatigue.

 Food habits: Excess use of caffeine, eating lots of sweets and milk products, irregular meals, skipping of meals, excessive use of alcohol etc.

Hormonal imbalances during menstruation and usage of oral contraceptives.

HOW DOES A MIGRAINE HEADACHE OCCUR?

Migraine occurs when arteries to the brain becomes narrow or constricted and then widen (dilates). This constriction and dilation causes activation of trigeminal nerves and the pain receptors causing this throbbing pain. In women due to imbalance of estrogen hormone and it triggers.

 MIGRAINE HEADACHE IN AYURVEDA:

The vata dosha gets aggravated and vitiates the rakta in the vessles of shiras. This vata along with the Kapha invades the half portion of the head causing shirashoola.It can be correlated to Vataja shirashoola, Ardhavabhedaka.
