Piles (also called Hemorrhoids) are swollen and inflamed veins in the lower part of the rectum or anus — similar to varicose veins that appear in the legs.

They can cause pain, itching, bleeding, or discomfort especially while sitting or passing stool.

Types of Piles

Internal Piles – Found inside the rectum; usually not visible and often painless, but may cause bleeding.

External Piles – Found under the skin around the anus; can be painful, itchy, and may form clots.

Common Causes

Chronic constipation or straining during bowel movements

Sitting for long periods (especially on the toilet)

Low-fiber diet

Obesity

Pregnancy (increased pressure in the pelvic area)

Lack of physical activity

Common Symptoms

Bleeding during bowel movement (bright red blood)

Swelling or a lump near the anus

Pain, itching, or irritation around the anus

Mucus discharge

Feeling of incomplete bowel emptying
