Ayurveda for Dengue and Its Prevention

Ayurveda for Dengue and Its Prevention

Dengue fever (Dandaka Jwara / Viral Jwara in Ayurveda) is a viral infection spread by the Aedes mosquito. Ayurveda does not name dengue specifically, but it explains fevers caused by external factors (Agantuja Jwara) and gives guidelines for boosting immunity, reducing fever, and preventing complications.

Ayurvedic View on Dengue

Doshas involved: Primarily Pitta (fever, burning, rash) and Kapha-Vata imbalance (weakness, body ache, joint pain).

Raktadushti (vitiation of blood): Explains symptoms like low platelet count, bleeding tendency, skin rashes.

Agni Dushti (impaired digestion/metabolism): Leads to low immunity and slow recovery.

Ayurvedic Management During Dengue

1. Fever & Body Pain Relief

Herbal decoctions (Kashayams):

Tulsi (Holy Basil) – reduces fever, improves immunity.

Guduchi (Giloy) – powerful Rasayana, antiviral, and immunomodulator.

Neem & Papaya leaves – support platelet production and blood purification.

Sudarshan Churna / Sudarshan Ghanvati – classical formulation for viral fevers.

2. Platelet Support & Blood Health

Papaya leaf juice / extract – known to help increase platelet count.

Aloe vera with Giloy – supports liver and blood purification.

Wheatgrass juice – rich in chlorophyll and micronutrients.

3. Digestive & Strengthening Support

Light, easily digestible diet (kanji, rice gruel, moong dal soup).

Pomegranate, grapes, and coconut water – restore energy and balance Pitta.

Chyawanprash (post recovery) – Rasayana for immunity building.

Prevention of Dengue through Ayurveda

1. Strengthening Immunity (Vyadhi Kshamatva)

Daily Rasayanas:

Guduchi, Amla, Ashwagandha, Tulsi tea.

Chyawanprash – daily in small amounts.

Dinacharya: Maintain a regular routine, good sleep, yoga, pranayama.

2. Mosquito Protection (Agantu Nidana Parivarjana)

Burn Neem leaves / Camphor for fumigation.

Apply Neem oil or citronella oil mixed with coconut oil on exposed skin.

Keep surroundings clean, avoid stagnant water (Ayurveda emphasizes Swasthavritta – hygiene and environment).

3. Seasonal Care (Ritucharya)

During monsoon and post-monsoon (when dengue risk is high), take preventive herbs like:

Guduchi Satva

Tulsi + Honey decoction

Trikatu churna (for digestion and metabolism).

In general

Reducing fever & symptoms with herbs like Guduchi, Tulsi, Neem.

Supporting platelets & immunity with Papaya leaves, Pomegranate, Wheatgrass.

Preventing recurrence with Rasayana therapy and lifestyle care.
