Sun Protection with the Help of Ayurveda

Sun Protection with the Help of Ayurveda

In Ayurveda, the skin is considered a mirror of overall health. Protection from the sun is not just about blocking UV rays, but also about nourishing the skin from within and outside to maintain its natural balance (doshas). Unlike chemical sunscreens, Ayurvedic sun protection focuses on herbal shields, internal cooling, and lifestyle practices.

Internal Protection (From Within)

Dietary Cooling

Include foods with sheetala guna (cooling property) like cucumber, watermelon, coconut water, buttermilk, and leafy greens.

Avoid excessive spicy, oily, and fermented foods that increase pitta dosha.

Herbs & Natural Supplements

Amla (Indian Gooseberry) – rich in Vitamin C, supports skin repair.

Aloe Vera Juice – soothes internal heat and protects skin.

Sandalwood powder with milk – consumed in small medicinal doses (under guidance) for cooling.

External Protection (Topical)

Herbal Oils (Taila)

Coconut oil: Acts as a mild natural sunscreen and keeps skin hydrated.

Sesame oil: Traditional pre-sun exposure oil; protects from dryness.

Aloe Vera Gel + Rose water: Cooling and protective.

Face Packs & Lepas

Sandalwood + Turmeric + Rose water paste – cooling, anti-inflammatory.

Fuller’s earth (Multani Mitti) + Aloe vera gel – absorbs heat and refreshes skin.

Herbal Sunscreens (Ayurveda-inspired formulations)

Many Ayurvedic skincare brands use herbs like Lodhra, Ushira, Yashtimadhu (Licorice), Manjistha, Neem, and Aloe that provide natural UV protection and reduce pigmentation.

Protect your skin naturally without harsh chemicals! Ayurveda teaches us to balance Pitta dosha and nourish the skin inside & out.
