Anaemia is a condition in which the number of red blood cells or their oxygen-carrying capacity is insufficient to meet physiological needs, which varies by age, sex, altitude, smoking and pregnancy status. Anaemia affects both adults and children, of both genders and also pregnant woman and adolescent girls.Anaemia is a major killer of population in India. Anemia is more common in developing countries where people suffer from malnutrition.
WHAT IS ANAEMIA:
Anaemia is the decrease in number of RBCs or haemoglobin resulting in lower ability of the blood to carry oxygen to body tissues.Blood is the fluid that circulates in the heart, arteries, capillaries, and veins of vertebrate animals carrying nourishment and oxygen to the cells and to bring away waste products from all parts of the body.The main function of RBCs are to carry oxygen to all parts of the body and to bring carbon dioxide to the lungs. RBCs are also called erythrocytes as they are responsible for the characteristic colour of our blood.
Normal value of hemoglobin:
Adult Males: 13.0 to 18.0 gm/dl
Adult females: 11.5 to 16.5 gm/dl/
Children: 11 to 16 gm/dl
Pregnant women: 11 to 14 gm/dl.
AYURVEDIC PERSPECTIVE OF ANAEMIA
According to Ayurveda, anaemia is the imbalance of internal metabolism which arises due to various causative factors like.
Food habits: Foods which are sour, salt, alkaline and more spicy food and food which are having opposite qualities.
Physical activities: Excessive exercise, day sleep,excessive blood loss.
Other causes :Protein malnutrition,Infections,Bone Marrow disease,Worm infestations.
Hemolytic causes: Vit B12, Folic acid, ascorbic acid.
HOW ANEMIA OCCURS:
Iron deficiency is thought to be the most common cause of anaemia globally, although other conditions, such as folate, vitamin B12 and vitamin A deficiencies, chronic inflammation, parasitic infections, and inherited disorders can all cause anaemia. Anaemia is defined as decrease in the number of RBCs or hemoglobin.
According to Ayurveda, due to the above causative factors which makes imbalance of pitta and other two doshas, resides in between the skin and muscle layer vitiates the blood and causes pallor (anaemia).
TREATMENT OF ANAEMIA:
Supplements of iron, vitamin B12, folic acid.
Blood transfusion.
Dietary advice like green leafy vegetables, fats, etc.
