Uterine fibroids are non cancerous (benign) tumors originating in the uterus. Seen in middle and later years of reproductive years. The size of fibroids can range from seedlings to bulky masses. They can be multiple or single. Seen in 3 out of 4 women usually between the years of 30 to 40 years. Obese and overweight women are at higher risk. Patients may be affected with heavy and painful menstruation.
WHAT IS FIBROID UTERUS?
They are benign tumors that originate from the myometrium of the uterus. They can be located in the wall, outside the wall of uterus, in the muscle beneath the lining of uterus or in the neck of the cervix. They are present during pregnancy shrink or disappear after pregnancy as the uterus goes back to normal size.
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF FIBROID UTERUS:
They are asymptomatic when they are small in size.
- There may be painful and heavy bleeding during periods.
- There may be enlarged and bloated abdomen.
- Backache
- Frequent urination due to bladder pressure.
- Painful intercourse and painful defecation.
- Due to this, miscarriage, bleeding and premature labor can occur and in some cases, infertility is seen rarely.
HOW DOES FIBROID UTERUS OCCUR?
The main reason is not yet identified, but hormonal imbalances are one of the main reason especially estrogen hormones. During pregnancy the estrogen level increases so it increases in size and it shrinks after pregnancy, and after menopause.

Due to excess intake of cold, heavy and fried items there will be vitiation of the three humors in the body mainly kapha vata predominance that causes the disease.
