Ayurvedic Lumbar Oil Retention Therapy for Lower Back Disorders
Kati Vasti is a specialised Ayurvedic treatment targeting the lumbar (lower back) region, offering significant relief from pain, stiffness, and degenerative conditions of the spine. This therapy is particularly effective for chronic musculoskeletal and neurological issues affecting the lower back and lower limbs.
What Does “Kati Vasti” Mean?
- Kati – Lower back region
- Vasti – To retain or hold (typically medicated oil)
In this procedure, warm herbal oil is retained over the lumbar spine using a well made from black gram flour paste, creating a sealed reservoir. The oil is kept in contact with the affected area for a specified duration, under the supervision of an Ayurvedic physician. One or two qualified therapists perform the therapy based on the condition.
Therapeutic Benefits:
Reduces inflammation and chronic pain in the lumbar spine
Enhances blood circulation to the lower back region
Relieves muscle stiffness, spasms, and nerve compression
Nourishes and rejuvenates vertebral discs, ligaments, and soft tissues
Alleviates radiating pain, numbness, or tingling in the lower limbs
Helps in maintaining spinal curvature and posture
Slows or halts degenerative processes in the spine

MODE OF ACTION OF KATI VASTI
Mode of Action
Kati Vasti combines thermal, transdermal, and pharmacological mechanisms to deliver therapeutic effects:
- The lipid-based medicated oils penetrate the skin due to their affinity with phospholipid cell membranes, allowing deeper tissue action.
- Continuous warm oil application raises the local temperature by 2–3°C, inducing vasodilation and enhancing oxygenation and nutrient supply.
- Improves circulation and promotes the removal of pain-producing chemicals, toxins, and waste metabolites from the lumbar region.
- Herbal oils used in Kati Vasti possess anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and muscle-relaxing properties, acting directly on affected tissues and nerves.
- The Snehana (oleation) and Swedana (sudation) effects relax the muscles, soften stiffness, and restore the mobility of the spine.
- The thermal stimulation works as a counter-irritant, calming pain receptors and providing a soothing, sedative effect.
