Virechana Karma

Therapeutic Purgation for Pitta Disorders and Systemic Detoxification

Virechana is one of the core detoxification procedures (Shodhana Chikitsa) in Panchakarma, primarily indicated for the elimination of vitiated Pitta dosha and accumulated toxins (Ama) through the anal route. It involves the administration of specific purgative medicines that act on the gastrointestinal tract to expel morbid substances, promoting internal cleansing and doshic balance.

Key Benefits:

Deep detoxification of the liver, intestines, and bloodstream

Enhances mucosal blood supply and improves digestive function

Delays aging and improves tissue metabolism

Clears inflammatory and metabolic toxins

Restores balance in Pitta-related conditions

Modulates secretory and immune functions

Aids in weight regulation, skin health, and mental clarity

MODE OF ACTION OF VERECHANA KARMA

  • Virechana Dravyas (purgative medicines) exhibit downward-moving action (Adhobhaga Prabhava) due to their Jala and Prithvi Mahabhuta dominance.
  • These drugs act at the mucosal level, temporarily increasing permeability to draw toxins from cellular and plasma levels into the gut.
  • Prior Snehana (internal oleation) and Swedana (sudation) therapies help mobilize toxins, ensuring their effective evacuation.
  • The intestines act as an outlet to eliminate morbid Pitta, metabolic wastes, and harmful molecules—thus restoring systemic equilibrium.
