Hanu Vasti
INTRODUCTION:
Hanu Vasti is a specialized Ayurvedic therapy designed to address various conditions affecting the jaw (temporo-mandibular) region. It is highly effective for musculoskeletal disorders, pain and stiffness, inflammation of the temporo-mandibular joint (TMJ), myofascial pain, fibromyalgia, joint hypomobility, disc bulge, and certain neurological conditions.
The term “Hanu” refers to the jaw or temporal region, while “Vasti” means “to hold or retain.” In this procedure, medicated oil is retained in the temporal region for a specific duration, using a barrier made of black gram flour. The therapy is performed by one or two trained therapists under the guidance of an Ayurvedic physician, using herbal oils selected according to the patient’s condition.
Therapeutic Benefits
Relieves stiffness and pain in the temporo-mandibular joint
Reduces earache associated with jaw disorders
Supports dental and gum health
Nourishes facial muscles and nerves
Enhances jaw mobility and reduces inflammation
MODE OF ACTION OF HANU VASTI
Hanu Vasti acts through a combination of pharmacological, thermal, and structural mechanisms:
- Medicated oils, rich in anti-inflammatory and analgesic herbs, penetrate the skin through the transdermal route, thanks to their lipid-based nature that aligns with phospholipid cell membranes.
- The warm oil increases local temperature by 2–3°C, causing vasodilation, which enhances blood circulation, nutrient delivery, and removal of toxins and free radicals.
- The procedure stimulates skin receptors, helping to calm pain signals, reduce neuromuscular tension, and promote relaxation.
- Continuous exposure helps lubricate the jaw joint, supporting smoother movement and preventing degeneration of bone, cartilage, and soft tissue in the area.
- The Snehana (oleation) and Swedana (mild sudation) effects work together to release deep-seated stiffness and trigger points, especially in conditions like fibromyalgia and myofascial pain syndromes.
