Prishta Vasti
Comprehensive Ayurvedic Oil Retention Therapy for Spine & Back Disorders
Prishta Vasti is an intensive Ayurvedic treatment that focuses on the entire spine—from the cervical to the lumbar region. It is especially beneficial in managing chronic and degenerative spinal conditions, inflammatory musculoskeletal disorders, and post-traumatic spinal injuries.
What is Prishta Vasti?
- Prishta – Refers to the back region (from neck to lower back)
- Vasti – Retention of medicated oil in a localized area
In this therapy, warm medicated oil is retained over the full length of the spine using a dough ring made of black gram flour. The oil is kept in place for a stipulated duration. The procedure is performed by two trained therapists under the guidance of an Ayurvedic physician, following a systematic protocol.

MODE OF ACTION OF PRISTHA VASTI
The effectiveness of Prishta Vasti lies in its multi-faceted therapeutic actions:
- Snehana (Oleation):Â Enhances tissue softness, reduces friction, and improves flexibility
- Swedana (Sudation):Â Induces gentle sweating, enabling toxin removal and improved circulation
- Transdermal Absorption: Herbal oils penetrate the skin, delivering anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and regenerative compounds directly to deep tissues
- Temperature Regulation: Warm oil raises the local temperature, causing vasodilation which enhances nutrient delivery and waste removal
- Neuromuscular Impact: The procedure soothes irritated spinal nerves, alleviating symptoms like radiating pain or tingling sensations
This treatment restores structural balance and aids in the repair of ligaments, tendons, intervertebral discs, and bone structures, especially beneficial in chronic or degenerative spinal conditions.
