Vasti Karma
Therapeutic Enema for Vata Disorders and Systemic Detoxification
Vasti (or Basti) is one of the most powerful and essential procedures in Panchakarma, specifically designed to treat Vata-related disorders. It involves the introduction of medicated oils, ghee, or herbal decoctions into the rectum, enabling both local and systemic therapeutic effects.
In Ayurveda, over 80 Vata-dominant conditions are described, and Vasti is considered the most effective treatment for managing the majority of them.
Indications:
Vata Disorders – Sciatica, Arthritis, Gout, Rheumatism, Spondylosis
Digestive Issues – Constipation, Hyperacidity, Abdominal Distension
Neurological Conditions – Backache, Neck Pain, Paralysis, Neuralgia
Urological & Reproductive Disorders – Kidney Stones, Sexual Dysfunction
General Conditions – Chronic Fever, Cold, Vomiting, Cardiac Pain

Types of Vasti (Based on Medication Used):
- Kashaya Vasti (Niruha/Asthapana Vasti) – Herbal decoction-based therapeutic enema, used primarily for detoxification
- Sneha Vasti (Anuvasana Vasti) – Medicated oil/ghee-based enema, used mainly for nourishment and lubrication.
MODE OF ACTION:
- Vasti is administered via the transrectal route, allowing rapid absorption through the richly vascularized and lipid-permeable rectal mucosa.
- Unlike oral medications, Vasti acts without needing digestion, initiating immediate mass peristalsis and effective expulsion of morbid toxins from the large intestine.
- Once inside the Pakwashaya (large intestine), it enhances absorption of essential minerals like sodium, potassium, and vitamin B12, vital for neurological health.
- It stimulates and nourishes the colonic nerve plexuses (connected to the hypogastric and lumbosacral plexuses), helping address spinal, neurological, and pelvic disorders.
- Overall, Vasti improves colon function, nervous system health, tissue nourishment, and systemic detoxification—making it a comprehensive treatment modality in Ayurveda.
